I think colleges must scrap the Common App.

They should have a system allowing recommendations and transcripts to be sent out to numerous colleges, so as not to burden the high schools and the teachers.

Kids should have to apply individually to each college. I think it would cut down on a lot of applications.

My kid applied to several schools she wasn't interested in because it was free! She just clicked a few buttons, answered a few questions, copied and pasted an essay, and sent the applications off.

It all seemed like a colossal waste of time on all sides.

Also, the USNWR ratings should be made illegal!! All ratings of colleges should be illegal!

USNWR rankings encourage schools like the University of Chicago and Columbia (notorious for this) to send out letters to kids with good test scores urging them to apply to their colleges. My kid got a few of these letters, applied to one of the schools, and was rejected flat out. Not waitlisted or deferred. What a waste of everyone's time! I'm certain they send these letters to kids they have no interest in accepting just to increase their selecdtivity. Get rid of the USNWR or similar rankings, and this garbage will end.

And colleges should interview all their applicants, either in person or on Zoom. Interviews should be required.

Instead of the SAT, kids should have to sit in a proctored room and write out answers to questions the colleges ask, making it impossible for parents to hire "consultants" to write their kids' college essays.

Colleges don't make money on applications, so they need to find ways to end this insane madness of 50K applications to a school like Northwestern. (Back in my day, Northwestern was a middling school, not extremely selective.)

Parents are finding ways to game the system with college consultants and test prep. End all of that, and the college application process will become more sane.
