I was a parentified tween and teen caring for my younger brother with severe ADHD. I was a bad experience for us both. He resented me for telling him what he could or couldn’t do. I resented him for the stress it caused trying to keep him alive and for the distraction from my school work. We have no relationship today as adults although I am close with other siblings that I was not assigned to watch. I never asked my older child watch the younger one for more than a couple minutes like if I needed to carry several loads of shopping from the car into the house late at night.
I’m sorry you had a bad experience. The results in my family were different. I have Adud and my sister a decade older often took care of me after school when my parents were at work. All my siblings worked or did chores of one type or another, as did I. And I often watched their children when I was a teen and they were in their twenties with young kids and needed help. To my mind, it’s what families do. I expect my kids to do a fair amount to help around the house and watching siblings can be part of that (although the age spread in my kids is not as large so I didn’t really have one babysitting a young one.)
