The SIS was supposed to be reworked on some level - granted, I haven't seen it - to allow for some latitude for kids to talk about themselves more broadly. The hope is that with these writing samples, there is no correct answer and the admissions committee is looking for kids from different perspectives and with different goals and ambitions. The hope is that the only prep is just for kids to be the best versions of themselves and let the chips fall where they may.
But I'm still not seeing how that will help select the best kids for TJ, rather than selecting for garden variety bright kids who can write a good essay. It seems like magical thinking to imagine that essays about ambitions and passions will correctly identify highly gifted kids rather than highly coached kids or even regular UMC kids. For better or worse, the TJ test at least did identify the math super geniuses. What will they use in the current system to find those kids who are legitimately in the top 0.1%?
