I can't imagine volunteering to help coach. I had to warm my son's team up doing rondos when the coach was running late, and some of the 13 year old kids were such a PITA - refusing to take their turn in the middle, complaining that things were unfair. No amount of "favor" curried would be enough to warrant it.
Nice to hear a parent with a little perspective of what coaches often deal with. The no-knucklehead factor my first cut point when thinking about which players to keep for all stars or travel or hope don't show up the next year/don't request me for rec. Second is the knucklehead factor of the parents, meaning coaching from the sidelines, not respecting my/the team's time and space while holding a training session, acting petulantly when there is a poor call or a rough play by the other team etc.. Well, it's more like 1A and 1B. Next is the player attentive when I'm giving instructions and do they try hard. They don't have to be particularly good--that's my job to help them become good/better. They just can't be primadonnas or exhibit signs of being an a-hole.
