Gates invented Windows which made PC's user friendly with a graphic interface. Prior to that you would have to interact in DOS on a PC. Also, Gates invented desktop applications which were standardized and user friendly. So yes, Gates invented the PC as you know it.

Bill Gates didn’t invent the PC. He didn’t invent MS-DOS either; it was a rebrand of 86-DOS, which was then purchased by Microsoft.

My dad worked with some of the teams that helped invent the first PCs.  He is silent generation (born in depression, starting working in precursor to the computer industry in early 1950s).  [/quote]
