No. This is a very sophomoric explanation.

Hedge fund a-holes shorted the stock ... they only make money if it goes down and they expect it to go down. They “promise” to buy it, they plan to buy it low.

The Reddit geeks bought the stock and drove up the stock. The hedge fund a-holes had to buy high, geeks sold off to  hedge fund a-holes.[/quote]
