I appreciate the transparency of the Two Rivers parent survey, but since when are parents trained public health experts? Isn’t the lack of public guidance using data and science based information one of the biggest criticisms of US during this pandemic? Isn’t an abrupt shutdown of our educational system and all the holes in social services that schools were trying to cover pre-pandemic a public health crisis in itself?
I think human beings have a right to be able to assess for themselves whether they will put their family in a situation where they risk dying or unknown disability. It is a matter of human dignity. It should be one factor in the decisionmaking. Not the only factor but one.
Sure, but not one person has proposed getting rid of a DL option for and family who wants it. No one. There is no risk that a family who chooses to keep their kids home to avoid exposure will be forced to send kids to school anyway. Yet there is a very real risk that many families will suffer long term economic and mental health consequences because we couldn’t figure out a way to offer limited in person schooling. Here in the richest country on earth, despite the fact that schools all over the world have found a way I don’t want anyone who doesn’t want to take the risk of in person school to be forced to do so. But right now, many families ARE being exposed to risks they would never choose for themselves and they are offered no other option. That’s not right.
