I am a conservative who hates Trump and my boyfriend is a conservative who doesn't really seem to care? He voted for Trump last time and says he won't be voting for Trump again in 2020 but he just can't pull the lever for Biden. It really irritates me. It's like c'mon, I know you know how bad Trump is for this country. He claims he would vote for Biden but that Biden hasn't earned his vote and that just saying "I'm not Trump!" isn't enough to win over the conservatives. (I'm not convinced, because I'm a conservative who would vote for a dog over Trump) Sometimes he also says things that give me pause like "Idk what the big deal with Q Anon is, they're just the internet version of drunk uncles spewing conspiracy theories" or "people should be allowed to protest masks, even if I think it's important to wear them." If you met my boyfriend, you wouldn't even know he's conservative, that's how middle of the road he seems, but he's more sympathetic to the Trump supporters than I would like. I'm just glad his super far right friends haven't gotten to him; one of them texted him the other night about how Kyle Rittenhouse was acting in self-defense and my bf was like ummmm idk about that, he probably shouldn't have been there in the first place and we need to wait for more information. The only thing that's been really hard for us these last few months is the renaming of things. As a southern conservative, I am all for tearing down statues of confederate generals/politicians, it is such a simple thing to do that would mean so much to so many POC but my bf thinks it's unnecessary and overly PC. I recently said the Confederacy was treasonous and he trotted out the old "Now hold on, slavery is bad but back then people pledged allegiance to their state, not the United States, they didn't have the federal system we have now." It was truly the dumbest argument I ever heard (he's not even southern...like, I should be the one making this dumbass argument and I'm not lol) and I told him so. Like op mentioned in her post, my bf is extremely well-educated and is smarter than the average American, so I'm not sure why he makes these arguments. It's very odd.
