I didn't put this in the "Pets" subsection b/c it's really more of a neighborhood/community question. I am not a dog owner, so I don't know what the standards are. We have an older man in the neighborhood whom we have always been pleasant with when we see him. I don't know his name, but he frequently walks his dog (seems like it is a younger black lab maybe -- not full grown) on the sidewalks. He tends to let his dog roam on the various owners' property. I don't really have a problem with this b/c dogs want to explore, right? As long as the dog is on a leash, he can sniff around my flowers or grass. My problem is that he lets his dog pee on our lawn. My handyman saw it and commented on it yesterday. So, when I saw the man and his dog today, I watched, and sure enough, the dog came to the middle of our lawn and peed. I went outside and said "sir, could I ask that you not let your dog pee on our lawn." And he immediately resisted saying, "oh, so I should keep him off of your lawn, but he can pee on everyone else's lawn?" (or something close to that -- suggesting that I was increasing the burden on other lawns by restricting his access to my lawn. And I said that the pee is acidic and can kill the grass, and again he argued with me about asking if he was supposed to remember that JUST MY LAWN was the one his dog couldn't pee on... etc. I said, well, we recently found dog poop on our lawn as well. He said it wasn't his, etc. (maybe it wasn't). Ultimately, he was miffed that I asked for him to keep his dog off our property. (FWIW, there is a little strip of grass b/t the sidewalk and the street and I presume most people let their dogs pee there on all the mailboxes -- b/c the paint at the bottom of all the mailboxes gets stripped off from it.) Anyway -- what is the usual practice for dog owners in regards to neighbors' lawns?
We've been recently having issues with neighbours and their dogs as well. So happy I found this forum. So when we first moved in, we had no idea that we would come about these issues. It wasn't until our first summer that we realized on the city blvd side that owners were leaving their dogs poop and not picking them up. We have to maintain it so I was so pissed off. There were so many piles. We had no idea who was leaving them. We started to pay more attention and we realized a house down the street from us had signs up so clearly this has been an issue for awhile now (in the neighbourhood). We've caught a few ppl before and have asked them to pick up. There's a few people we suspect so we have been keeping an eye on them. We spoke to city and they told us the best way to catch these owners was to get a camera (which we did). That's when we noticed how many dogs pass by each day. We were fine with the pee but then as time went on and we realized the lawn was getting burned and plants were dying and even when owners picked up their poop off the lawn our kids still step in them because they don't clean it well and leave leftovers. We decided to speak to neighbours and ask them to direct their pets towards the blvd to do their business. I don't care as long as they pick it up on the blvd side, but I prefer not to have their pets do their business on our property where our kids play. Neighbours just don't care. They continued to let their dogs pee on our plants even after we asked nicely. For the lawn, I've been quietly going out to dilute with water after their dogs pee on it. I put out a sign asking them to be considerate and to respect out property. I over heard one neighbour say "how do you stop a dog from peeing?" Well, yes I get that, and it has crossed my mind many times, but that's why I'm asking you to please direct your pet towards the blvd side (like many other owners have). I don't see why you can't. But she feels like her dog is entitled to pee anywhere. I've seen owners look the other way while their pets are on our lawn doing their business. The owner is pretending to look on the phones. I just find it so disrespectful especially since they know we have asked and have signs up. Some also let their pets pee on the signs too. For almost a year we have not said anything and were hoping that with signs put up, they would understand, but we realized ppl were just plain disrespectful. They were still letting their pets do their business on our property and pissing on the sign too. I had it and started to speak up. I just didn't care anymore. One of my neighbours across would let their dog out to pee on our lawn and head back home. Right now we have a sign that plainly says no pee or poop on our property. I'm sure it's still going to be ignored so we are thinking of a fence. But why should we be the ones incurring the cost of a fence and all these other deterrents just because these owners are ignoring what we're asking of them? So frustrating.
