If RBG can hold on a little longer, I think Mitch will have to wait until after the election. However, if she goes before year-end, I think we're looking at Amy Barrett.
Why would he have to wait? He controls the senate.
DP. I don’t think this was pp’s point, but there’s a lot of potential peril to confirming a nominee so close to an election. First, going ahead with confirmation now when Merrill Garland was blocked might alienate some independents that can appreciate the hypocrisy in going forward. Second, if Trump nominates an extremist, it could swing moderates in favor of the Dem nominee. It would all but force Trump to nominate a true centrist or McConnell to put a halt on confirmation until after the election if Trump insisted on an extremist.
Mitch would still do it in a heartbeat. This is his legacy. Also, if Trump goes with Amy Barrett (midwest roots, mother of seven with two adoptive black children and a special needs child) and Dems get too rabid in tearing her down during a confirmation fight, that could also alienate independents.
Amy CONEY Barrett was raised in a cult that her father helped run, and she continues to belong to and have her children educated in. There are mountains of opposition research on her and the People of Praise. She's a religious nutjob and would not be confirmed. Trump knows this and he won't nominate her.
No idea about any of that, but she seems intellectually unimpressive, and some of her decisions will make conservatives queasy.
Why? Because of her opinions or because she didn't go to Harvard or Yale?
Nah, that's just the standard opposition boiler plate cliche libs will lob at anyone they don't like. Look at how they refer to Dr Ben Carson. They call him an idiot, Uncle Tom, Oreo... the guy is literally a world famous pediatric neurosurgeon - but they call him an "Oreo".... It's all they've got. Ignore them.
