Her psychologist warned us to back off on the food pushing because while she doesn’t have an eating disorder now, our anxiety could trigger one. Has anyone been through this?
Was the psychologist an eating disorder specialist? Because this isn't how eating disorders actually occur. Was this the only psychologist who ruled out an eating disorder? Not all of them know what they are talking about. I would consider making an appointment with an eating disorder specialist, incluing a psychiatrist not a psychologist.
I think eating disorders occur for lots of reasons. Sorry I misspoke. It was the dietician, who specializes in eating disorders and runs the feeding clinic at Children’s, who said this. The psychologist agreed. She did not say that anxiety causes eating disorders. But creating stress and judgement around eating can trigger a kid who is already prone to disordered eating due to genetics or other factors. Right now at 11, DD is still compliant and wants to please. At 13 or 14 she may not be. When she decides to assert her independence, we need to take emotion out of the food equation.
