I'm too busy hating Asuelu's fiance, the half-Samoan 30-year-old child who needs her family's permission for everything. So annoying. Her dad's dislike for Samoans is interesting to me, based on the very little I know about Samoan culture. There are lots of Samoan Mormons, and "traditional" child-rearing in Samoa is very, very harsh. I once worked with a lot of international families, and had to spend time educating Samoan parents about what constitute child abuse in the US. When the dad mentioned he didn't want his daughters to marry Samoans because of how he was raised, it made me think that he might have been abused in his childhood. And he came to the US at 16? No mention has been made of his parents coming with him.
I don't think her dad hates Samoans. I read that the production company (or whoever does editing) spliced scenes to make it appear he hates them. Kalani and her sister spoke up about it on their twitter account, and how they're displeased with how TLC is making their dad out to be.
Interesting. It does seem like an element that—if true—would be explored further. If it’s producer driven, then that would explain why there hasn’t been much elaboration about WHY.
