I know VA commute times.  And times. And  W. Fairfax Loudoun where the tech workers live  to CC is not doable.   Even Oakton to CC is bad — at least 45 minutes if you get to metro, park and ride in.  More than a half hour to drive.  Everyone in NOVA commutes that route.  They DO NOT need to add more commuters on 495/66.

Amazon pays well. But not well enough to spend a million buck for a shitshack and put 2 kids in a school system where they might have to go to HS in shifts. Or put them in ACPS or DCPs. Hard pass.  [/quote]

I am not going to nitpick Herndon to CC options.   It does occur to me that in your particular situation if your DH went to work in Crystal City, y'all could move to Annandale/Lincolnia and have a very nice commute to TJ and a not so bad commute to CC.  Of course if you have another kid you would have to decide if the schools in that part of the County worked for you. [/quote]

They don’t. We’re not moving Kid 2 who is just starting HS. And even I’d DC2 is younger, Easter Fairfax schools where we could afford to live are bad.

Plus, Amazon has the reputation of burning through workers quickly. Why would we move if in 2-3 years, DH might well be back working in the Dulles Tech corridor?

Also, given what it costs to move and buy and sell a house, Amazon would have to be offering a huge raise to make it make sense economically.  I have a friend in a Southern state who was just hired to work in the tech corridor, at 100% telework he will in his home stat, fly in twice a year, and work remotely because the company was desperate to fill the job.

Easier solution: work at one of the zillion jobs they are having trouble filling in the Tech corridor.  It’s the calculus many people world make.  Which could be a problem for Amazon in CC.

Amazon caps at $160,000 and you may get a bonus or two the first year till the RSU's kick in (which you have to pay taxes on when they vest or sell them to pay the taxes).  It makes absolutely no sense to move and you just do the commute if you cannot telecommute.  Many are doing an 1-2 hour commute depending on traffic.[/quote]
