9:47 - more subs is good if you have a team of overscheduled kids. We have a roster of 11 for a 7x7 format, and I wish we could roster 12. 3 kids are on multiple soccer teams, a couple of kids have softball conflicts, several are church-y families that will no-show for Sunday games, and a few have families who like to travel on weekends. So we're usually missing at least a couple of girls per game, or someone's coming late or leaving early.
Honestly, these people should not be playing travel soccer id it's not their priority. There is a commitment to the team when you accept an offer.
+100 I am all for missing for an important family event---a family wedding (which you should know and communicate well in advance), obviously any death, even a best friend's party in the younger age groups (again, communicated well in advance). BUT--if these people are so wishy-washy that they are missing regularly for church (we used to do Saturday evening mass as a kid because all 3 of us played travel soccer on Sundays; and the Lord understood during tournament weekends when that wasn't possible), if they are missing because they are doing multiple sports (they shouldn't commit to a travel team if they can't make many of the games/practices for conflicts), and if families travel frequently on the weekends they should not be playing travel soccer (again--once in awhile thing with lots of advance--okay--but not if you are going to your country home every other weekend). If I had a kid in the 'BUT' category above, I would not select him/her the following year. I would let them know it was due to attendance and lack of commitment. At higher levels/ages, circumstances are stricter and by teens kid will make sacrifices, missing a friend's party, etc.,,,,U12 and under I am a lot more understanding.
