[/quote] If you thought she was the one, what was your reluctance to help? Paying off the debt before interest kicked in would have been in both your financial interests if you got married, and it’s not like she was asking you to pay it all off yourself. It sounds like she was planning to put $550 of her own money toward the debt each month (which is more than 25% of her gross income every month), and needed help with the remaining $200 necessary to get it paid off. The only reason not to work together to shore up your financial future is if you’re not sure you’ll have a financial future. And really, a grad student running up $8k in debt over the course of three years is not spending wildly.[/quote]
