Also you need to make some compromises on career, often. Like one or both of you can't work more than 40 hours a week, at least without significant outsourcing ($$$). I used to live comfortably on about $1200 a month. Admittedly, I rented in a group house, not in the DMV. But it was a nice group house! I had a yard and a garden and a basement...ah, those were the days. My discretionary expenses lately also includes four new tires, copays for counseling and OT (child with special needs), etc. We make $180K combined in the DMV. We do fine. [/quote]
