On checking receipts: there are so many people now from different "cultures" who think nothing of stealing, that it's impossible to not do it. It's basic safety like locking doors and not leaving one's purse unattended. Street smarts of sorts.
Well today I accidentally left my purse in my cart at Costco while I walked 2 aisles away to get something. No one, from any of the many cultures represented, took it. It's also common to park your cart of paid items while you visit the snack bar, and I have never had anything stolen from my cart. The receipt thing is because they don't bag items so it's impossible to know who has been through a cashier, and as someone mentioned there are no low value items at Costco. It would be easy for one bad apple to cost the store $1000 at a time.
