I have a love/hate relationship with Beyonce. Sometimes when I read about her -- new toilet seat in any hotel room she stays in on tour, 10K dress for Ivy, Barack and Michelle as best buds -- I feel pieces of my skin flaking off from pure envy. I like her music but only for dancing. I am as uncomfortable as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie with her male-centered brand of feminism. We all know that she wouldn't have become the media juggernaut she did had she covered her thighs and derriere, like, EVER. And yet she can be so touchingly vulnerable at times, so human. And I don't think I would do much better if I had been performing since toddlerhood and famous from the teen years. What was she taught to do besides arrest the gaze, captivate and allure with her physicality?
This. I think she's not very bright, not a great role model for girls (I have a 5yo AA girl who doesn't really know who she is), and seems to have only a shallow understanding of feminism. I also wonder what she's going to do once she ages out of the skimpy clothes. However, I do think she's a great singer and performer.
+1. Except I don't think she's a great singer either.
I'm the Love/Hater PP. Today I was listening to Partition on the treadmill and felt unnerved by the refrain 'I just wanna be the girl you like, the girl you want.' And yet I remain conflicted. We want our girls to be more than beauties but who is really raising kids to believe that beauty is irrelevant? I think of Beyonce as our American geisha and as such reflective of the culture that produced her. We definitely have an ambivalence about strong women and their looks. Where do we draw the line? My hair is permed. Is that okay? Plenty of women dye their gray away. Is that okay? We all wear makeup and heels at least occasionally. Is that okay? I wear tight jeans and flirt with guys in my gym. Is that okay? My girls know Bey from music in the car, not so much videos. Jay-Z they know only as 'Beyonce's husband.' I can't render an absolute verdict. She's like a Snickers. Most of the time I avoid sugar but every so often, even though it's full of junk and I know it, nothing but a Snickers will do.
