The posters you are talking about don't even see people like mechanics and waiters and gas line technicians. The compare themselves exclusively to people they consider peers and don't really even think of people like their nanny or their kids' teachers or the people who clean their house, take care of their lawn, tutor their kids, etc., as equals in the same way.

Everyone does this to some extent but people in the DMV who are obsessed with their kids being "successful" are among the worst offenders. I once told a dinner party of people that I'd be okay if my kid didn't go to college at all, as long as they had a plan for their future that made sense and were motivated to work towards it, and people just got quiet and changed the subject. These are folks who define success very, very narrowly and don't have time or patience for the idea that what they are trying to give their kid might not even be worthwhile in the end.[/quote]
