Because a lot of foreign born Asians don't know how to swim. Swimming is not part of Asian schooling curriculum like it is in VA public schools.
My Asian roommate in grad school could not swim, ride a bike or drive. Those are considered essential life skills here, but not in Asia. Some parents might teach their kids but more likely, the kid masters them on their own.[/quote]

Ignorant comment. Your view of others' cultures and a continent is based on your experience with one roommate you had who was from Asia? Wonder how the Olympian swimmers from other countries learned and trained to swim? in their bathrooms? Konanki came to US before preschool. how do you know she didn't learn to swim while she lived in VA, or while in college in PA?  In this case, no one seems to know if she even went into the water that morning. Regardless, that water is tough for even the most advanced swimmers.[/quote]
