I hate Bowser so much for what she has done to our city that I hope the deal goes through. She's a complete failure and I would love to kick her when she's down. She has overseen the squander and ruin of the Nation's Capital. After nearly 30 decades, I can hardly wait to blow this joint.
This is dumb and spiteful. If you actually care about the District, you should be hoping that the DC government can somehow keep the teams in the city. CapOne is clearly the best location from a transport perspective for the entire region. And its in need of a more comprehensive renovation. I don't care if Bowser or someone else gets the job done. We really can't lose these teams, given the moribund RTO status and lack of foot traffic.
I no longer care about the District. That's my point. I've been a good, tax paying, engaged resident for 30 years. My reward is a crime riddled city where criminals are more valued than me and my family. Let it burn.
You sound like a petulant child. The pendulum is going to swing back fast in DC.
I am a DP, I really hope it does. 10 years ago you could go to a game or concert at Capital One Arena (it was the Verizon Center!) and then walk around to a bar or restaurant, go to a happy hour, then to your car or Metro. Even at night. It wasn’t a huge “nightlife” area but it was lively and fun. And no one was openly dealing drugs on the street. Your car wouldn’t be stolen and you wouldn’t be carjacked. There were panhandlers and homeless but they were not mentally disturbed and aggressive as they are now. But if you go there now you know that’s now how it is anymore. I agree that a central location in the city is the best for all the fans. But the entire DC government dropped the ball big time and it opened up an avenue for Youngkin and the VA state and local government to quietly step in and Youngkin to convince his friend to move the teams. So yeah. I really really hope this is a wake up call for the city too, but I’m not 100% certain it will be. Don’t know what it’ll take to return everything to the good old days of, like, 2008-2016.
You can still do those things. I even did them last night. The DC Government didn't drop the ball. Read the Axios report. DC doesn't have 70 acres and 2 billion dollars to give to Leonsis to retain the teams. That is the proposal Virginia made. It has nothing to do with crime, which is just the cop out bogeyman (yes it is an issue but it isn't why the teams are moving) - this is a plain old money grab that two old friends conjured up at Virginia taxpayer expense.
Right. So knowing they were in such a weak negotiating position they should have agreed to a deal over a year ago instead of slow rolling it and playing footsy with the Commanders.
Unless DC was coming up with 70 acres and 2 billion dollars, it was never going to matter what the city offered.
Actually, there are lots of real estate opportunities that were potentially available here. Former RFK site is an obvious one. Plenty of underutilized office buildings as well. Yes, some creativity would be required.
DC doesn't own the RFK site and anywhere there are office buildings, there are also streets that are part of the L'Enfant plan that cannot be altered. Any other bright ideas?
DC may soon control the RFK site. And there is plenty of potential in DC.
DC cannot deed land to Leonsis that it doesn't own. "soon control" isn't good enough.
