Part of his story is that he doesn't have a realistic idea of what love is. He lost his father before he was mature enough to see Jack and his parents' marriage for all the complexity and work that it was. They all have Jack and the marriage on an unattainable pedestal. To question that perfection would probably feel like disloyalty to their dead father. His view of loving Sophie is stuck in that same time period. They seemed to have been devoted young lovers as teens, but as adults, their relationship was never functional. He cheated on her the first time, and lied about addiction the second time. [/quote]
