This is obscene. The time for this conversation was a year ago. The RNC can rally around a twice impeached convicted felon who gutted the DOJ and staged a coup, but our ethical, quite effective president and presumptive nominee is being pushed out weeks before the DNC because he’s getting old. The media and Dem leadership is doing a good job setting the stage for a Trump win.
The democrats recognize that Biden has been a good president. However, the rapid decline of his health simply prevents him from continuing. It's human nature, not a machiavellian plan to push him out.
My issue is that it is shortsighted and irresponsible to just rush along and push Biden out without even having any inkling of a viable replacement. And don't say "oh but other potential candidates have been discussed!" given we don't know if they would agree to it, don't know how they poll against Trump, and in fact some of the names that were floated have already said outright they didn't want to run.
The fact that Biden has to be pushed out without a viable replacement shows how desperate the situation has become. His entourage did not expect his decline to be this rapid. This mess also shows how important the VP pick is: it has to pave way for the next gen, not just some DEI decision.
I think in most cases Harris would have been a perfectly fine VP pick. It’s a supporting role, plenty of VPs have been competent but lackluster and didn’t go on to become president themselves. But with Biden’s age I think he really should have picked someone more established to pass the torch, and he really painted himself into a corner by saying the candidate would not only be a female or POC, but a POC female. I get why he felt he needed to do that, but unfortunately we are still at a point in this country where it limited his choices. At the time I thought Klobuchar would have been a stronger pick (and still do).
