LOL at kids being ostracized years from now because parents disagree with boundary studies. I like H so 90% of the community is going to look down on my kid years from now? GMAFB. It's not that deep. Kim, there's people that are dying...
It’s not. It was the pro H poster who first suggested that kids would be ostracized, which—I agree—is just wild. The 90% was in response to that person. I’m against H. But I’m not cool with calling kids losers or ostracizing kids. If H is the chosen option, while I don’t agree, I would work toward building a close knit community.
Dufief mom here (just catching up after a friend said this chain was wild today): I am so happy to hear this because this has had me concerned recently. I also want to say that I think the ongoing threat of litigation is going to undermine this effort to build a close knit community. Is this something that is being considered for Fallsmead and Lakewood families who, like you, wherever you are from, want this sort of community for all our kids?
Lol nice try. Admire the effort to stop litigation. The final decision isn’t the vote but what happens after litigation. Let the courts decide what the final decision is. And if it is H, ok let’s go full steam ahead. Plus litigation, or threat thereof, doesn’t stop community building or cluster wide events. I met plenty of very nice and great Dufief families at the Harlem Wizards game. Yall have a pretty cool principal and I didn’t know yall had a Dragon as a mascot, which is also pretty neat!
Super not an effort to stop litigation--do I think it's frivolous and a waste, sure, but not my waste. I really do worry about the message it sends to the kids of "we are still trying to get you guys to not go to school with them or over there" which feels very counter to trying to build community to me. I come in peace, I promise!
The lawsuit is not at all about not going to school with XYZ group of kids. I personally am not in conversations with people who make disparaging about kids whether explicitly or implicitly. And if I heard people make those remarks, I would ask them to please shut up. Every group has its own “crazies”. Someone in the pro H group starts targeting folks by name. Someone else in pro H started calling kids losers.
Regardless of the basis for the lawsuit, I guess the desired outcome is to "not go to school over there with those people" so I guess I am not really sure families and children will be able to work to build community while still hoping it doesn't happen. But I am always open to being wrong and I really hope I am because we do all want the best for our kids, I know that. And, for sure on the last part--people are unhinged, about...so many things. I don't know about doxxing people (here? Fb?) but I did see the loser comment and thought it was gross. Especially from someone who is not personally impacted by the outcome. I have always asked people to approach others with understanding even if we disagree (reading the book, "I Respectfully Disagree: How to have difficult conversations in a divided world" now and it's great). I think it has been so disheartening/classless to see cluster schools target Dufief or the contingents from Stone Mill and Travilah who also are excited about this new chapter and really hope it stops.
My desired outcome for the lawsuit is to hold MCPS accountable for its decision making, making sure that it complies with all laws, including state laws governing state funding, and does everything in a transparent manner. I'm personally sick and tired of the gross negligence coming from elected officials who appear to be asleep at the wheel. the amount of waste and mismanagement needs to stop. Yes people here were doxxed. Seems like Jeff removed those comments though. But anyways, I agree on your respectfully disagreeing point & agree we shouldn't be targeting Dufief or any other contingents from anywhere.
I hear where you are coming from, but what would holding them accountable look like? At this point, the school is built and the county is struggling to get more funds. I think that, even if a delay is made, it will be hard to financially justify filling it as a 27th high school at this point, and using a brand new building as a holding school when other buildings are nearing end of life is also not a great decision. Do you envision other forms of accountability, then? Getting Taylor or others fired? Increased oversight with future use of state funds? At the same time, I do wonder the extent to which school systems may be allowed to 'move' their schools and the reasons governing this. In the case of Wootton, I agree with you. There's no location based reason why the Crown Farm site is any better than the current one (although it's not worse really either). Having said that, one thing that stood out to me that Taylor said in a recent meeting was that the Middle School locations were a problem - and that problems will continue existing so long as Hoover and CJMS are right next to each other and we have, on the other hand, various ES to the west. I tend to agree with them there, and think it's a shame that both of those schools were recently rebuilt, as moving one of them west (perhaps somewhere near the Potomac/Travilah ES boundary) would have been better.
