[twitter]https://x.com/juliadavisnews/status/1919831056926052811?s=46&t=kf1qYlCXQnKgUhJWEIu2vg[/twitter]
"But I didn't think he meant meeeeeeee... waaaaaaaah.." Like I said, Hispanic people now need to carry around their US passports. I know he was a green cardholder, so that wouldn't have helped, but ICE has detained US citizens, too. So, you need to carry your passports around, especially if you live in Trump country.
Yeah he was on borrowed time, infliction of injury conviction, should have come up or would have come up when he tried to renew his green card. At which point he would have been detained until his case was heard, at which point he would probably have been deported. Which makes his parents extra stupid for voting for Trump. Oh well. People balked, when it was said to them after Trump's election, that a green card didn't make them safe. Lol... well now they know. Keep your nose clean, not even a speeding ticket or else.
We have rules that are reasonably clearly spelled out, about what crimes can lose your LPS status. Trump is just arbitrarily removing people, which is not okay. An unreliable and arbitrary government is unAmerican. Which is why everyone is so alarmed.
But this has always been the case green card holders who commit crimes get deported, This guys crime was violent but I know a guy who got went to renew his green card, forgot that he had a writing bad check charge, and was detained at the federal immigration detention center in Va., for a year while waiting for his case to be heard. Thanks to a good pro-bono lawyer he was cleared, but it was close. I have another friend, green card holder, who 10 years ago was stopped at Dulles, he was accused of being a convicted and deported drug kingpin, trying to enter illegally. His identity had been stolen, at some point and became and assumed alias of the felon. He spent thousands on lawyers fees trying to clear it all up and was eventually cleared. In his case, that night after hours of questioning, he at least was released pending a hearing. But under Trump this is the kind of person who’d be disappeared no questions asked. That’s scary. Yes what Trump is doing is awful, but any green card holders who didn’t know that they could be detained and deported even for non-violent crimes are at the FAFO stage. The difference now is these people could have flown under the radar for a while but now he’s tracking them down.
But they get convicted and serve time before they are deported. First I ever knew that was in the late 80s, a woman who had burned her child with an iron got 7 years and was to be deported after she served her prison sentence. Plus, that would also allow for any appeals to be run, so people who were wrongfully convicted would still have a chance.
