Let's just start a thread for all NoVa soccer. "XYZ Soccer - better or worse?". Comments will include: That club sucks That club is the greatest ever That club's TD is an idiot That club's TD is the greatest ever That club has no clue what is going on That club has the pulse of NoVa soccer That club is starting a DA - they are going to be awful That club is starting a DA - will steal all the kids from other clubs That club has a great Rec Program That club has a big divide between Rec and Travel Etc. Etc. Etc. Mr. Gorbachev, lock down this thread!
That thread exists. Minus the positive comments, unless you count "DD's club could kick your DD's club's ass."
I work for a local consulting firm that fields an adult team, many of us are local and are alumni of some of the area's top clubs. We have players that were on the USMNT, D1 teams, and some that play on the 2nd and 3rd teams of local clubs. Guess what, none of us are playing for an EPL team. We work our asses off in an office and do what we love on the field after work. So for all the bitching and moaning that goes on in these forums......go out and enjoy watching your kids play. Wins/losses on the field creates a balanced learning experience.
That is awesome, but you also actually need some wins to make the learning to be actually balanced. When across the board the clubs teams are not only losing but not even sniffing a .500 record it is no longer enough to say "none of us are playing for an EPL team." That is a cop out. Results are not the end all beat all, but they are a barometer of progress. If the kids are developing and learning at some point it would show up in results. But the number of teams that have gone win less is embarrassing. And yes, like it or not parents will put their kids in a program that demonstrates success.
This isn't necessarily true of VYS, but would you consider a club to be "demonstrating success" if it had a thriving program through U12 or so and then sent a lot of good players to DA, ECNL, Loudoun, Arlington, Braddock Road, etc.? And the upper-age girls teams -- which, again, played half as many games as other teams because VPL lets teams take off for high school -- are proof that you CAN have a successful team in VYS. Some age groups keep most of their upper-level talent, some don't. And finally -- that "upper level" is what, 5 percent of the kids who play in a club?
