I think there are two main reasons why people overpay for a house in AU Park. It is not necessarily that they think that Janney is better than Stoddert, Murch, Mann, etc. Rather it is that Janney feeds into Deal and also that there is a very convenient metro stop in the neighborhood. For many parents working downtown, it is convenient to drop the kid off at school and then walk right to the metro. Same on the way back. AU Park also has a suburban feel, almost like an extension of Bethesda, which is appealing to many folks. By the way, I have a 3rd grader at Janney and his classes have always ranged from 19-22 since Kindergarten. I would caution people not to assume that large is equivalent to overcrowded classes.
And the K classes at Hearst this year have 24 per class. Hearst parents -- stop promoting Hearst on DCUM or the class sizes will soon approach 30 like in some Janney classes! Keep your satisfaction to yourself and keep Hearst small!
Apart from the jumbo 30 kid 3rd grade class, class sizes are not 30. My kids's K class had 23 and 1st grade has 22 kids. As a Janney parent, the proximity to metro is just awesome for drop off and commutes.
There are no 30 kid classes this year at Janney.
PP here- yes, that was just last year. What are the class sizes now?
I know K is around 19, 1st ranges from 19-23, and 2nd is 23/24. FWIW 2nd and 4th grade are the "bubble years" and I think they've done a good job - this year - at making the class sizes smaller. Also, they've made more lunch periods and recess times to chill things about a bit in the common spaces. Yes, some kids eat lunch at 10:45 and 1:30, but the kids have settled into the schedule. The early lunchers get an afternoon snack, and the late lunchers get an early snack. I've got kids in both grades with the outlier lunch periods and they are having no issues with it. Overall, I think the principal and staff are doing a great job in making a big school work.
