Okay, well, DCPS is getting rid of principal discretion in favor of clear-cut policies that level the playing field and reduce the opportunity for old-style DC cronyism. Most new residents to DC find this to be a good thing. OP (whose story I can't even get straight - IB at Powell but also zoned for Deal?) would like EOTP schools to continue to allow principals to add and retain children at will based on their ability to be an asset to the school. Got it.
I was the one above who mentioned the principal discretion. That was in direct response to the PP asking how DCPS would filter people who were part of the school community. That is one way to ascertain that. I generally agree with the idea of a level playing field and a lack of cronyism, but I also don't think it is necessarily a great idea to remove ALL principal discretion in favor of a blanket rule. I love the school that we are in right now, but we rent. We are already attending OOB, so it doesn't matter for me personally, but if that was not the case and we were IB and wanted to buy a home, we would either need to find a house to buy within the school's catchment area or switch to a new school. I'm not saying it's not "fair." It just would suck to uproot a kid from somewhere they were thriving.
