Agreed with the above poster...the two couldn't be more dissimilar. Ever heard of slavery? Because that is kind of what you will be treated like if you are unfortunate enough to be borne into the lowest caste. I don't think america has anything remotely close to that. Please don't compare a housekeeper and a maid here in the U.S to a house servant in india, they have far more rights here. Similar job =/= similar circumstances.
Low caste people in India are treated horrifically but please let's not forget this country actually had slavery not too long ago, a permanent underclass now and life isn't exactly a first class bowl of cherries for migrant farmworkers and other immigrants.
Can we not compare something that happened 200 years ago in the U.S to something that is happening now? It was abolished for a reason.
First, it wasn't exactly 200 years ago. Second, the effects of it have resulted in a permanent underclass that fed, distracted and disproportionately imprisoned enough to prevent outright rebellion. Third, you didn't address the treatment of immigrant workers.
Seriously? 150 years ago*, fixed. Stop comparing black people to the lowest caste people in india. Last I checked, black people still have the same rights as everyone else now...you are comparing apples to oranges, it won't work. I don't need to address migrant workers because I'm responding to the person that brought up slavery as a comparison. I think its best if we keep illegal immigrant's out of this (if that is what you are getting at), because if you are not a legal citizen you should not have the same rights by default. Otherwise what is the point of citizenship? If you are talking about legal migrant workers, many of them do well for themselves, even better than nonimmigrants in many cases. Neither example is similar to the 'untouchables' who, unlike blacks and migrants, are not allowed to better themselves even if they are willing to put in the work for it.
