Literally it just means road or practice but in the Islamic sense, it generally refers to all actions/sayings , confirmations, approvals ect of the Prophet (saw), i-e the way he used to live his life. For ex, the prophet used to visit the sick and spend some time with them, so it is sunnah to visit the sick, he used to eat with his right hand, so it is sunnah to eat with your right hand, he used to break his fast with dates or water, so muslims do the same ect. Basically it means actions that the prophet saw did that muslims emulate. Some sunnahs are obligatory, some are recommended while some are optional..[/quote]
