I want baby Charlotte to marry Prince George. Has that been discussed yet?
Queen Elizabeth got the throne just because uncle wanted to marry an American and therefore had to abdicate
And the two are connected how?
HRH Prince George is in line for the throne... it may or may not be an issue in this day and age if he eventually wants to marry an American (it probably wouldn't be, because there were other specific details about Ms. Simpson's situation that made her a particularly controversial choice, which probably wouldn't apply here)... however if it is a major issue, then the parallels of the two situations are really quite obvious. Was this a serious question?
They are? Edward VIII didn't abdicate because he wanted to marry an American. He abdicated because he wanted to marry a divorced woman (who was further considered a trollop).
Yes, they are. 1. Ms. Simpson was an American. ----- miss Mezvinsky is an American 2. A marriage between HM Edward VIII and Ms. Simpson could not take place in the Church of England, of which HM was head (because Ms. Simpson was a divorcee) ----- a marriage between HRH Prince George and miss Mezvinsky might or might not be permitted in the CoE, of which HRH will one day be head, since miss Mezvinsky is likely to be raised in either the Jewish or Methodist faith and is highly unlikely to be raised CoE. I would have to do further research to verify, but I thought this was a requirement in a royal marriage of someone in the line of succession, and one would certainly think it would be a requirement for a future Queen Consort given that the King would be head of that church. 3. Ms. Simpson had a scandalous reputation and was considered to be somewhat lacking in morals. ----- I am very much a Clinton fan and I certainly hope miss Mezvinsky grows up to be a young woman of sound character, but it cannot be denied that her extended family have a somewhat, shall we say, controversial past. Her maternal family line are quite polarizing public figures, and President Clinton had that unfortunate very public indiscretion. Miss Mezvinsky's paternal grandfather the former congressman Edward Mezvinsky served time in federal prison on various criminal charges. While none of this can be laid directly at the feat of miss Mezvinsky herself and I do not believe that children ought to carry the sins of their fathers, so to speak, unfortunately I could easily see how these ghosts of the family's past could pose a bit of a problem for her reputation should she wish to pursue such a marriage. Overall I would say that, while obviously not quite the same, there are clear parallels between the two situations. Which is part of the reason I said in an earlier post that I hope the two do not end up wanting to marry, because I think it would be a complete logistical nightmare for both parties.
