My husband is a cancer researcher with an MD/PhD. I don't know why the PP associates that with Big Pharma - most research is publicly funded and at NIH or other similar institutions. Since we're in that world, we know plenty of kids who want to be doctors and scientists.
That was my sibling too but only one of their kids do nih funded research (at a major research hospital), and she’s fighting tooth and nail. Their other kids went into industry and are pretty comfortable and also doing important work to help humanity. I’m not throwing shade at people who go into big pharma. They gave us the shingles vaccine, tremendous advances in cancer drug and diabetes drugs, etc. I’m really upset about what’s happening with nih but pharma has long played a really important part in getting life saving medicines to market. I don’t even really fault pharma on the prices — when you see how much they have to put into labs in order to get one successful product, it’s sort of amazing it doesn’t cost more. And when you compare it to what the defense industry charges for planes or whatever, again it seems like a bargain.
