OP is clearly trying to dissuade people from applying to private and is worried about competition. I wonder how many kids she has that will be going through admissions in the coming years... And no, "top tier" tracks at various public do not compare with the teaching OR the curriculum. Public schools have been in a decline for years and it isn't getting any better.
I'm not sending my kids to private so no dog in this fight, but I sure as heck hope private supplies a better elementary and middle school education because frankly, MCPS kind of sucks at both. At least, their reading/writing/English curriculum and foreign language curriculum. Math and science seem ok. I went to a private school myself and the English and foreign language instruction was worlds better. We wrote papers in third and fourth grade that are far more advanced than anything my middle schooler has been asked to do. Heck, they don't even read full books or use textbooks. And yes, it makes a difference. A good textbook is an organized progression of ideas and instruction. Random downloaded snippets from websites do not replicate that instruction.
The not reading full books is so irritating. It’s really not that hard
It’s not up to the parents really to dictate all this. There are multiple reasons to move away from reading full books and they aren’t all bad. The entitlement of knowing how to educate your kids best is why MCPS / DCPS was problematic and a lot of privates continue to be problematic.
Sorry but parents should be able to choose some things here…
