There's THC and it's many different forms we are worried about. If you want to have a legit argument let's talk THC and all the hemp derivatives vs. some 1930s racist scare mongering term for a substance. If you understand it at this level, I'll have a frank discussion with you - it's not all great, but until then anyone saying there's a "marijuana problem" is just full of themselves the NYT author included.
