Just look at the Democrats pivot from the party of slavery to civil rights; all the blacks had to give them was to rewrite the immigration laws so that Democrats could find other sources of cheap labor to exploit. That was my reaction too.  Apparently all Democrats secretly want slaves, and conservatives have always been pro-organized labor, and Southern politics have always been free of racism.

Yep, LBJ drove a wedge in the working folk's collation they had, rather than make a decent minimum wage law or other concessions to labor like was going on in Europe and other places.  The tool of choice was the immigrant scab and a civil rights movement.  They knew what they were doing when they were doing it.
