I appreciate what OP listed are top colleges. Most (but not all) have global prestige as OP called it, but the reality is at least half on the list have no relevance to my family. Our eldest is a HS junior so have just started the process but already we can tell most so-called top colleges are not a great fit for our DC. This list, whether it's accurate or not, is not relevant to most families on a personal level. It is only relevant if you care about bragging right, status ranking and all the other distractions that we could already tell would hurt our relationship with our DC during this journey.
Welcome to DCUM's college board! All some on here care about is bragging rights. They are too chicken to tell you to your face that their kid is better/smarter/cooler than yours but anonymously on this board they can do that via touting where their kid was accepted etc. Some go as far as to care about whether that school is #15 "but really should be 7" or whether its T50 "but really better than x, y and z" which are ranked T20 or is at a SLAC which is differently rated "but really better than the T20" for all of the reasons it isn't ranked in the same group. The gist is always the same . . . my kid is better than your kid.
DP - this is quite insightful (I'm not being sarcastic). I think heightened parental anxiety over college makes these parents talk constantly about their DC's schools' ranking, our school better than your school, etc. as an outlet to self sooth and relieve their anxiety.
