The soldiers were taking Fiyero away to question/torture him, by hanging him on a pole in the middle of a field and beating him. So Elphaba cast a spell so it was impossible for him to be hurt (by turning him into a scarecrow/removing his flesh and bones). Once cast, the spell could not be reversed.[/quote]
