Because throwing people away does nothing to solve the underlying issues that lead to crime. You want to decrease crime, you go to the source and deal with it before crime happens. Jail has not actually been shown to be a deterrent, and only comes into play after something bad has already happened. Personally, I'd prefer more resources going towards preventing me from becoming someone's victim than toward punishing them after I do. [/quote]

If he had been thrown away long before arrest number 72 this poor woman would not have burns over 60% of her body including her head. We can do both-- throw him away forever AND deal with the source. Short-term keeps people safe-- get him off the street before he hurts or kills someone else sitting on a train or leaving the supermarket or picking up their kid from school. Doing your daily Starbucks run. Going to the doctor. What day to day activity would you like to complete without a career criminal throwing gasoline on you and setting you on fire? [/quote]
