I’ve now had decades of having cousins who went on kibbutz and married Israelis or went to Señor Frog in Cancun every year and even the ones who went to Florida to live in the ‘red thread’ communities. Half the family members had both Yiddish nicknames and professional names. You had to call one this name in public, and in private it was another.

The crazy thing was, in my adulthood, I married into a family who knows nothing about Jewish anything. When my stepfather died, my mother in law actually asked how they dig the hole since “I know they all have to be buried upright”

Also, although they never once ONCE even were able to pronounced my stepfather’s name correctly, even though it’s not difficult, somehow my MIL once came to me at a Thanksgiving and said, “I just wanted to let you know that some of the people I see who are your friends on Facebook are saying things against Israel”

I honestly swear to you my MIL knows absolutely shit about nothing to do with being Jewish, but her favorite news channel has convinced her that Israelis are our best friends. And she was talking to me like somehow I’d become some family spokesperson for anti-semitism.

In the meantime, I was married to her son for 30 years and he went into one of the professions and he, her son, was the one I had heard talking about cheap Jewish bastards and pulling pennies into copper coil.
