English aristocrats and gentry did immigrate to the southern United States, particularly to colonies like Virginia and the Carolinas, to establish a hierarchical society based on plantation agriculture and a planter class. These immigrants were often second and subsequent sons from the lesser gentry, were motivated by economic opportunities and sought to recreate a social order similar to England's, distinct from the more egalitarian settlements in New England.[/quote]
