1) Nurture regular family-friendly street markets and performances in select locations throughout the city. Think Eastern Market on weekends, but with more established businesses and locations. Union Market in NOMA is fabulous and should be a model that is more frequently used throughout the city.

2) Turn empty buildings and vacant lots into something fun and affordable. Not a bar or restaurant, of which there are plenty. Think climbing walls, outdoor gyms, breakdance cyphers, community art and performance spaces. Pay locals to hold outdoor classes like yoga, ballroom dancing, tai-chi, etc., in presently vacant spaces. More YMCAs.

3) Repeal recreational weed. Tax the hell out of stores selling synthetic drugs. Automated enforcement for ATVs and dirt bikes driving dangerously. Heavy consequences for violence and firearm crimes.

4) Deep clean and repaint public facilities and federal buildings, including metro stations. Do not demolish or rebuild, as this is more expensive and erases history. But a deep clean, fresh coat of paint, and minor repairs will help make the city look like it should.
