In the past five years I’ve been the victim of three crimes in DC. I only filed a police report on one of them since it involved several thousands of dollars of loss and I needed a report for insurance. I’m sure there are hundreds more like me. Crime in DC is really bad.
I’ve lived here 25 years and have never had even a package stolen and don’t know a single person who is a victim of crime. But neither my anecdote or yours is relevant nor your made up extrapolation…that’s like me saying there must be zero crime because I have never been a victim.
What neighborhood are you in? Would be helpful context. I’m in LaFayette ES area and I’d say almost 50% of neighborhood have had a package stolen or car window smashed. Most do not call police because they know it would be pointless and could potentially hurt property values.
CC DC also in Lafayette ES. It’s pretty stupid to think calling the police will hurt property values, nor do I know a single person who thinks like that.
You don’t think people check crime rates and school reviews before making the most important financial decision of their lives, really?
Not really…everyone knows this is a safe neighborhood. Nobody cares if there are police reports about packages being stolen. Any high profile crime would be heard about. It’s silly if you think your Upper NW home value is going to suffer due to Amazon packages getting swiped. I mean…go check the sexual offense registry and you will find a decent number living close to you…it’s what it is if you live in any city.
It’s silly to think a young family will move 1000 yards north for better schools or safety? We know dozens of them. And, so do you. Upper NW home values are artificially propped up by hipsters desperate to flee worse parts of the city and by traffic.
What does that have to do with reporting porch pirates to the police…which has zero impact on home values. I actually don’t know dozens of people moving 3/4 of a mile north…what they are moving from Forest Hills or Cleveland Park to CC DC because it’s so dangerous in those parts? Maybe read what you write before hitting submit. If anyone is moving due to crime it’s not because they are following the detsiled reports and noticing an uptick in petty crime…it’s because of major incidents that are widely known. Also, how are upper NW home values artificially propped up by anything? People move here for a SFH with some space vs living in denser parts of the city and because it’s actually cheaper per square foot to buy in upper NW vs many of the trendier parts of DC. Not to mention places like Kalorama, Mass Heights, Georgetown et al are way more expensive yet have worse public schools (which most of those residents could care less since their kids are private) and higher crime rates in their capture areas.
