I do agree that Duke beats Vanderbilt head to head all else being equal- there is likely a ton of overlap in applicants due to the school’s similarities. I think Duke also has a more east coast vs southern vibe that Vanderbilt has.

I attended the Vanderbilt admitted students day and overheard multiple student groups who were discussing getting into both schools. I’d bet that between the 2, a student would select Duke unless they received good merit at Vanderbilt, and they are also not right next to each other rankings-wise, Duke is quite a bit higher.  Students applying to these schools care about prestige.

My kid did not apply to Duke at all, so didn’t have that choice. They did select Vanderbilt over Michigan and UVA.

Their data, not mine. So even if not due to the # of responses, they still indicate the difference is not statistically significant.
