I have realized recently that misogyny isn’t really just a general hatred of women or a synonym for sexism, but a specific tool used against women who have risen above their perceived role in society that is pointed at them to knock them back in their “deserved” place. Women who are quietly at home cleaning the kitchen and raising their children without complaint don’t have too much to fear from it; it’s mostly when we gain power someone else thinks a man should have or otherwise step out of our perceived roles that the hate descends. Sexism is an ideology that justifies the patriarchy. Misogyny is effectively the punishing arm of the patriarchy. See Kate Manne’s “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny.” Fwiw, in case that helps anyone else.
Yes. And the thing about misogyny is that men and women who will claim not to be sexist will engage in misogyny when faced with a woman they deem to exceeded her role or trying to exceed her role. So an avowed feminist will FREAK out when a woman in their office asserts herself, but it will be couched as dislike for this specific woman or these specific behaviors and they'll never own up to the misogyny. "It's not that I don't respect any women leaders, it's just that THIS woman doesn't deserve this specific leadership role." And that's how it works with Amal. Of course there are women who work in international human rights who deserve praise and appreciation, but not THIS woman. THIS woman is a fashion plate, she's not serious, she's married to a Hollywood actor, she is posing as a human rights lawyer and her work isn't *real*. There's some idealized version of a female human rights lawyer out there but she wears dowdy suits and never married or had kids and she's certainly not glamorous, she has suffered for her achievements, as she should.
