80k/year is not a high salary for a lawyer, doctor, or someone with a PhD.  The government employs a lot of people with experience and education. [/quote]

Every federal employee gets a benefits statement each year. It lists your total benefits cost to the government and includes medical costs, social security, pension, and medicare costs.
