Kid really wants to quit, not going to be a starter and not getting any playing time , so 2-3 nights week sitting on the sidelines and then doing homework until 1am, so it’s a huge time suck. Kid wants to apply to competitive schools . Wil there be an issue with quitting mid season for college apps?
Why even mention the quitting part in college apps? In the EC section just list the sport, take down the hours from 10 hours a week for 20 weeks to 10 hours a week for 5 weeks. In the essays where you write about what playing the sport meant to you, etc. just stick with that and don't bring up the quitting part. They can't really come back at you for an omission, if at all they do. And let's face it, this is not what's going to make the difference when it comes to admissions. Sports only matter if you are being recruited for that sport. Other than that, it's just an activity much like bird watching or anything else that kids are "passionate" about.
It all adds up to misleading the admissions officers. You are counting on them being too busy to do the math. If you quit the team then either don't list it or discuss why you quit. Somebody else will be able to say they broke a bone or something and that is why they stopped playing. Just be honest.
Injured players typically remain on the team.
