Real estate investing relies heavily on debt and timing.  If the market is floating all boats, leverage through borrowing is wonderful and everyone wins.  When the cycle isn't good, then leverage is a death knell.  Mike survived a harsh period in his real estate investing and re-established himself, I can see how Brandon might have followed his father's legacy, investing and borrowing into the headwinds of a challenging COVID impacted real estate market where it becomes impossible to refinance properties or sell them for what you paid/invested.  From my personal perspective - and that of my family - the Miller's were wonderful people.  We are sincerely heartbroken.[/quote]

I know you mean well but your take is problematic and infuriating on so many levels. You have literally and quite innocuously peddled borderline anti semitic tropes with your long essay. 
     Did it ever cross your mind that Mike miller was nice to you because you belong to the same demographic ? That you weren't really a big shot investor he could swindle? That the myriad of lawsuits he faced weren't filed by bored people out to get him? What does where the Brandon character went to school have to do with his demonstrably proven deceptive character ? As if this country hasn't been ran to the ground already by your cherished ivy league crowd .

As for his parents supposed generosity, let me remind you that Bernard and Ruth Madoff were also wonderful,generous people—with money swindled from others, of course.

Genuinely curious, what was “literally and innocently borderline antisemitic” about this person’s overview of his positive relationship with Brandon’s father and remark that from his perspective that the father Michael’s business dealings were typical of the real estate world? In what way did the parents earn a comparison to the madoffs?

People took an interest in what happened largely as a result of the wife’s public lifestyle display. Many have touched on all of the other ways to solve a situation where one’s family’s income has decreased and the family needs to scale back their spending, other than the series of choices that seem to have been made.

In learning about this situation I mostly feel sadness for the kids who lost their father. And a sense that it’s best to live well below one’s means. How clearly this highlights that it’s relationships that matter, not lifestyle extravagances. [/quote]
