Wow. Lots of good info on this thread AND lots of crazy. I really don’t understand what causes people to be this hostile. With strangers. About a college. 🤷♀️ As someone who lives near Syracuse and has been on campus recently with my family for basketball games, I can share two things: (1) It is definitely a social school with tons of rah-rah school spirit! Not just at the games but the whole vibe surrounding them. Tons of kids walking around campus together, hanging out in and around group houses together (fraternity + non, I think). Some then went to the games, but many did not. Heading back to our car after the game, it was clear tons of kids had just been hanging out while the game was going. To me, it all had a fun, laid-back rah-rah “game day” feel - super appealing, if that’s your thing! (2) As I said, this was basketball season, so it was obviously WINTER. As in snow on the ground, grey skies, at least two of the games it was actually snowing lightly. And it didn’t seem to matter one bit. Life went on in what seemed to be the best of ways. Unless your kid is truly extra sensitive to cold/grey weather, I wouldn’t worry about it. Kids are resilient and it doesn’t hold them back from campus life. (That said, some kids truly prioritize warmth and sun over many other things. If that’s your kid, I highly recommend Clemson or University of South Carolina instead!) (3) Back to #1, we have friends whose kids are at Syracuse who are NOT into the sports/game day parties/fraternity scene at all and they love it, too. Remember, this is a BIG school. There are so many different types of kids - more than enough for anyone to find their tribe. Including the less sporty kids. (One of our kid’s friends is looking into the theater/production/arts program - apparently it’s great.)
