All of Bidens acts are shaped by politics. One of these detention scenarios advances the left’s political narrative, and one does not. He acted predictably.
One broke the law and was effectively used a bargaining chip for spies and felons imprisoned in the US. Two broke the laws of Turks and Caicos, a British Overseas Territory. They are not interested in trading, perhaps because they think the law is a sound one.
Many people believe in dumb laws - it is usually a lack of understanding of the consequences. Safety is a not a sufficient sacrifice for liberty.
T&C laws are not dumb. T&C has had a huge outbreak of violent crimes that have been caused by many foreign weapons being transported into the country. To try and stem the violence, they instituted the gun laws. They used to be more lenient. There was a guy who was sentenced to 8 months, and only had time served between when he was incarcerated until his trial and fined $5K. But more and more foreign nationals have been bringing in ammunition that T&C decided that they had to have more serious consequences, so they instituted mandatory minimum sentences, which is where we are. If people had paid more attention and were more cautious, we likely wouldn't be in this situation. But Americans really need to pay more attention to foreign laws. Sovereign countries are getting tired of Americans just ignoring their laws an inconveniences. So, you now get to treat foreign laws as inconveniences as significant risk.
