Maryland voters not only really like Hogan personally but even some Democrats found it useful to have a pragmatic Republican governor to check some of the excesses of the legislature. The same has been true in blue Massachusetts with moderate GOP governors like Weld, Romney (at the time) and Charlie Baker. The problem is that if a pragmatic, even moderate, Republican goes to the US Senate, they will count toward a GOP majority to run the chamber.[/quote]
